Pushing and pulling sound like advanced tricks, but the idea is simple: you decide to treat your film as if it were faster or slower than the box says, and then you tell the lab to develop it accordingly. Push, and a roll of ISO 400 becomes your 1600 in a dim bar. Pull, and that same 400 behaves like a gentler 200 under harsh midday sun.
What makes it different from turning a dial on a digital camera is timing. Digital ISO is applied per frame, after the fact. With film, the decision is baked into development — so it applies to the entire roll, and you commit to it the moment you start shooting.
What "pushing" actually means
Every film has a box speed — its rated ISO, the speed the manufacturer says gives you the most faithful result. Pushing means rating the film higher than that and underexposing on purpose: you set your meter to EI 1600 on a 400 film, which is two stops under. Then, in development, the lab leaves the film in the chemistry longer to build the underexposed image back up.
Pulling is the mirror image: rate the film lower than box (say 200 on a 400 film), overexpose by a stop, and shorten development to compensate.
The shorthand is in stops. "Push two" = rate two stops faster (400 → 1600). "Pull one" = rate one stop slower (400 → 200).
Exposure happens in the camera. Pushing and pulling happen in the tank.
What it does to the picture
Compensated development isn't a free lunch — it's a trade. Roughly, here's the deal:

More contrast, more grain, less shadowHighlights and midtones come up nicely, but the underexposed shadows never recorded much detail, so they go dark and empty. Grain gets coarser and contrast climbs. On black and white this reads as gritty, moody, photojournalistic — often exactly the look people push for.

Lower contrast, finer grain, tamer highlightsOverexposing then under-developing softens contrast and protects blown highlights — useful for very harsh, high-contrast light. Grain tightens up. The risk is flat, muddy results if you overdo it.
When to reach for it
Push when there isn't enough light and you need a usable shutter speed — a concert, a dim café, dusk on the street — and you'd rather have a grainy, contrasty frame than a blurry one. Tri-X pushed to 1600 is a classic for exactly this. Push, too, when you simply want that harder, grainier look.
Pull far less often: mainly to rein in a brutally contrasty scene, or when you've deliberately overexposed for smoother tones and finer grain. Most photographers push ten rolls before they ever pull one.
A few honest caveats. Black-and-white film pushes most gracefully; colour negative (C-41) tolerates a stop or two but shifts colour as you go; slide film (E6) can be pushed and pulled but is least forgiving of error. And pushing doesn't create shadow detail that exposure never captured — it rescues the rest of the frame around those empty shadows. Treat it as a creative tool, not a fix for "I needed more light."
The part people forget: commit, and write it down
Because development is per-roll, the whole roll has to be shot at the same rating. You can't push frames 1–12 and shoot the rest at box speed; the tank doesn't know the difference. Decide before you load, or at least before you start the roll, and stick with it.
Then record it — in two places. Mark the canister so the right roll gets the right development, and tell your lab clearly ("push 2 stops") when you drop it off; they can't detect it from the film. And note it for yourself, frame by frame, so that when the scans come back you know which look came from which choice. A roll that says "Tri-X @ 1600, pushed 2" next to the frames is how a happy accident becomes a technique you can repeat.
